What's Really in Our Water?
A confession first

When Casey and I first got married, he had a water distiller in the basement. I took one look at it and said, "No way. You can't drink that. You'll lose all your minerals."

I was so sure. And I was wrong.

So consider this a little detective story. I'm not here to scare you or point fingers. We all grew up drinking what came out of the tap, me included. I just want to look at the clues together, because water is the one thing almost nobody changes, and it touches every cell you have.

The clues are under our feet

Here in the MonDak, we live on top of an ancient riverbed. Our ground is rich in minerals and rich in fossil fuels. That's just geology, and it's part of what makes this place what it is. But the water that moves through that ground carries a fingerprint of it. Some of those minerals are good. Some, like naturally occurring radium, uranium and arsenic, we'd rather not drink every day.

Then add the rest of the journey. Water travels through pipes that are often decades old. It picks up runoff from the fields around us. It gets treated with chlorine, which can react with natural organic matter and form byproducts of its own.

None of that makes anyone a villain. It just means "it came out of the tap" isn't the end of the story.

The twist: legal isn't the same as healthy

Here's the part that surprised me most. Our local water systems work hard, and most of them meet every federal standard. But many of those legal limits haven't been updated in about 20 years.

Take radium. The federal limit is 5 picocuries per liter. The health goal that California set, and that the Environmental Working Group uses, is 0.05. That's a hundredfold gap between "legal" and "ideal."

Then there's what isn't routinely tested at all. Pharmaceuticals, hormones and microplastics were only added to the EPA's watch list for the first time this year. There's still no regular testing for them in our tap water.

And one more clue: boiling won't fix it. Radium doesn't boil off until around 1,500°C. Your kettle isn't getting there.

Case closed: what you can actually do

This is where it gets good, because you have more control than you think.

- If you already filter your water, you're ahead of most people. You cared enough to act. That's the hard part.
- Distilling is as close to pure as it gets. Distillation separates the water from what's in it, instead of trying to catch everything on the way through. It's an upfront investment, but it's foundational.
- Put the minerals back. This is the part I had wrong all those years ago. It's easy: a pinch of good salt like Baja Gold, a pinch of baking soda, an electrolyte you like, or fulvic and humic minerals.
- Test your body, not just your water. I'd rather see you run a urine toxicity test than test your tap. It shows what your body is actually holding on to. Then do the foundational cleanup work and retest. That puts you back in the driver's seat.
- Foundations before supplements. If you've tried everything and still feel stuck, look at your water. It's the one thing almost nobody changes.

Changing your water is one thing. Clearing what's already stored in your tissues is another, and that's where real change happens.

Come hear the whole story

I'm digging into all of this, including what our local water reports show and what they don't, at Grateful and Well this Saturday, November 14. Come sit in, ask your questions, and see the countertop distiller in person. The event starts @ 10 am CST, location, the Grand Williston Convention Center.

Can't make it? I'm streaming the talk, so look for the replay on AwakenedWellnessTV on YouTube.

Water is the foundation. Let's start there.
